The 60-second routine that keeps gold plating bright
Plated jewellery lives or dies by habit, not luck. One minute a day keeps the glow for years — here is the exact routine.
Gold plating does not fade on a schedule. It fades on contact — with perfume, sweat, chlorine and the bottom of a crowded handbag. Which is good news, because contact is something you control. This one-minute routine is the whole secret to demi-fine jewellery that still looks new next year.
Last on, first off — 10 seconds
Jewellery goes on after moisturiser, sunscreen and perfume have dried, and comes off before you wash your face at night. Fragrance and skincare are the fastest plating-killers there are; this single habit does more than every polishing cloth combined.
The evening wipe — 20 seconds
When a piece comes off, run it once through a soft, dry cloth — an old cotton t-shirt is perfect. You are lifting the day’s skin oils and salt before they can sit on the finish overnight. No liquids, no dips, no toothpaste (yes, people try toothpaste — it is sandpaper in a tube).
Store it dry and dark — 20 seconds
Humidity is the quiet enemy, especially in coastal cities. Each piece goes back into its pouch or a lined box compartment, clasps closed, ideally with a small silica gel sachet nearby — save the ones that come in shoe boxes. Separate compartments also stop pieces scratching each other, which matters as much as tarnish.
The weekly once-over — 10 seconds, once a week
Before you wear a favourite, glance at the clasp and the jump rings. A drop of movement caught early is a free fix; a lost pendant is not. If a piece ever needs more than a dry cloth, use lukewarm water, a tiny amount of mild soap, a rinse and an immediate thorough dry — and make it rare.
What to skip entirely
- Showers, pools and the sea — chlorine and salt strip plating faster than anything else.
- Workouts — sweat is salt water with ambition.
- Ultrasonic cleaners and silver dips — made for solid metals, ruinous for plated ones.
- Sleeping in chains — friction thins the finish at exactly the points you see most.
That is the whole routine: about a minute a day, and none of it hard. Plated jewellery is honest about what it is — which is exactly why a little care goes such a long way.
